William Bolcom & Joan Morris - Pulitzer-prize winning composer and pianist William Bolcom and mezzo-soprano Joan Morris have capitivated audiences across the nation and abroad. Heralded as one of the great musical collaborations of our time by the Boston Globe, this husband-and-wife duo is highly acclaimed for its finely gauged and vividly imagined interpretations of American popular songs from the late nineteenth century through the 1930s, as well as the latest cabaret songs with poet-lyricist Arnold Weinstein. Bolcom and Morris have won a wide following with their expansive repertoire, which is complemented by their sophisticated yet unpretentious stage presence. The duo has appeared at Alice Tully Hall, the 92nd Street Y, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City; Jordan Hall in Boston; the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia; and at the Tanglewood, Soleto USA, Aspen, San Luis Obispo, Cabrillo, and Ravinia Festivals. Bolcom and Morris have recorded more than two dozen albums, including their best-selling After the Ball - A Treasury of Turn-of-the-Century Popular Songs, two collections of cabaret songs - Black Max and Lime Jello - An American Cabaret, and the recent Orchids in the Moonlight and The Carioca. They are on the faculty of the University of Michigan School of Music.
Southpaw Isle Steelband - While rooted in Caribbean pan tradition, Southpaw Isle Steelband continually stretches the limits of the steelband sound. The group's repertoire includes jazz, classical, samba, calypso, and original compositions. As the only non-Caribbean ensemble to perform at the 2004 World Steelband Festival in Trinidad, Southpaw Isle is truly dedicated to this amazing melodic-percussion instrument. The group's newly released CD, Carol of the Pans, is available on the Jumbie Records Label. In December 2005, the group presented the world premiere of "A Caribbean Christmas Mass" for orchestra, chorus and steelband by Glenn McClure. The Warren Symphony commissioned this genre-bending work after Southpaw Isle wowed audiences in the previous season with their performance of Deborah Teason's "Trinity, Concerto for Steelband and Orchestra." The group has presented workshops, assemblies, and educational concerts for students of all ages including two sold-out performances as part of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra's Tiny Tots Concert Series at the Max M. Fisher Music Center.
Eric Schlosser - Author of the national bestseller Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser investigates how the often-overlooked areas of American business and culture impact all of our lives. He uncovers such issues as the appalling working conditions in meat-packing plants and the "flavor industry" that gives fast food its distinctive - and addicting - taste. Fast Food Nation reached number one on the Chronicle of Higher Education's list of "What They're Reading on College Campuses." Schlosser reveals how fast food has been a revolutionary force in American life, transforming our diet as well as our economy, workforce, and popular culture. The San Francisco Chronicle called the book "as disturbing as it is irresistible...exhaustively research, frighteningly convincing." Schlosser's second New York Times bestseller, Reefer Madness: Sex, Drugs and Cheap Labor in the American Black Market (2003), was inspired by his Atlantic Monthly research on pornography, illegal immigration, and the war on drugs. In the spring of 2006, Schlosser released Chew on This: Everything You Don't Want to Know about Fast Food, a New York Times children's bestseller. Schlosser is a correspondent for the Atlantic Monthly. His work has appeared in Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, the Nation and the New Yorker.
