Strategic Choices - The Evansville Experience

Every university has its own unique set of cultural and educational attributes that define the institution. At the University of Evansville, five such attributes define the "Evansville Experience."

Academic Quality

At the heart of the Evansville experience is an uncompromising emphasis on academic quality. This quality is derived from an outstanding faculty, the enrollment of academically well prepared students, and the availability of excellent facilities and other resources needed to offer a rich learning environment. The University of Evansville learning environment is collaborative, student-centered and focused on teaching in a primarily undergraduate setting.

Remarkable results occur when faculty and students collaborate on learning. Collaborative opportunities are reflected in substantial student/faculty contact outside the classroom in activities that run the gamut from undergraduate research and senior projects to study abroad and one-on-one discussions. The model we value promotes faculty and students working together as colleagues in learning.

Being student-centered is fundamental to our effort to personalize the entire living and learning experience. Therefore, the University makes the educational needs and interests of students its highest priority. It also signifies a strong belief that student success only occurs when the University commits itself to fully understanding and meeting the needs of every student.

The University prides itself in being a teaching institution. In expressing this priority, the University seeks to find and reward faculty members who are passionate about teaching and care deeply about the success of their students.

The University has intentionally focused its attention on the education of undergraduate students. That clear emphasis serves to maximize the amount of institutional focus and resources directed toward the education of students and stands as testimony to our belief that, in higher education, nothing is more important than a solid undergraduate foundation for the world of work or advanced study.

International Focus

The University believes that students should be prepared to live, work and learn in an ever more intimate global society. To this end, the University actively recruits international students to campus and encourages American students to study abroad at Harlaxton College or one of the more than 100 cooperating universities around the world. This focus is further supported by a general education curriculum that emphasizes a worldview.

Distinctive Curriculum

By focusing general education on the arts and sciences, the University seeks to prepare students for a lifetime of opportunity and successful transitions. Preparing students with superior communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills is fundamental to our educational philosophy. These abilities, along with the confidence to conceptualize and contextualize, are critical to rapid advancement. Our goal is to prepare students with the skills and abilities necessary to quickly assume positions of leadership in their profession and community.

Residential Community

The importance of being a residential campus is more about students being actively involved in a stimulating campus community than about where they actually reside. Our goal is to provide opportunities for students to grow in their ability to take responsibility for their own behavior, relationships and the attainment of personal goals. The residential experience provides an important laboratory where students learn to help shape the quality of life in the community where they live. Understanding and taking responsibility for both community and self is an important step in leadership development.

Values-Based Environment

The University remains committed to its long-standing relationship with the United Methodist Church. Methodism's historic support of higher education and a strong tradition of inclusiveness and open inquiry are fundamental philosophies that support the mission of the University. It is a tradition that allows students to pursue a personal faith journey on their own terms and to become servant leaders who appreciate and respond to the needs of others. The relationship reflects our strong belief in a values-based learning environment that encourages students to understand the ethical and spiritual significance of their personal and professional behavior.
