Biology Faculty Profile
Ann Powell
Assistant Professor of Biology
You will hear from students that UE's biology faculty members are accessible with an open door policy, and Ann Powell is no exception. "I want students to feel that they can ask me for help and advice at any time."
Professor Powell wants students to reach their full potential, which is why she expects her students to have a willingness to work hard. "I try to be enthusiastic about the material and help students learn how to study biology and engage with challenging course material. I want them to gain an appreciation and love of biology. I want them to see that biology is relevant to their everyday lives, and to see that, although challenging, it can be fun and rewarding."
For the past two years, Professor Powell has worked with two students on studying the evolutionary relationships in blueberry species. She encourages her students to be involved with research — either on campus with UE faculty members or through a research experience for undergraduates (REU). "I want my students to gain many important and valuable skills, which will prepare them for graduate or professional school. Students need to know that they need to be prepared to work hard, but to save time for fun. It is possible to do both."
