Classical Studies Student Profile
Emily Scott
Hopkinsville, Kentucky
For students in the classical studies program, a study abroad experience brings all that has been learned in the classroom to life. Emily Scott's study abroad experience in Greece through College Year in Athens (CYA) was all that and more. "It's one thing to see pictures in a book or hear about something in class, but when you actually see it in person, it's amazing. That was my reaction the first time I saw the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Parthenon."
Living in Athens was an excellent way for Emily to utilize all she learned while studying ancient Greek at UE. "It was a one-of-a-kind experience having classes at the Acropolis and the Agora. It was great being able to actually read some of the inscriptions at the ancient sites and on archaeological finds. I give a lot of credit to Professor Ware for encouraging me to apply to CYA."
One of Emily's most rewarding experiences in Greece occurred in a little village on the island of Evia. "A friend and I had hiked to Mt. Ohi and were walking back to the hotel when we spotted one of the hotel workers. We spent the day with him and his mother and learned a lot about life on the island. Speaking with him really broadened my perspective and made me realize that not everyone experiences life the same way."
