Communication Alumni Profiles
Shannon Novosel
Class of 2009
As a professional education coordinator at a Denver nonprofit, Shannon Novosel uses the skill set she developed while at the University of Evansville. "My position involves a lot of event planning, communication, marketing, Web design, and presentations. My course work prepared me well for this position and helped me adapt quickly to the professional work place."
At UE, Shannon took advantage of the extras, including career services and study abroad in Spain. "Gene Wells in career services helped me polish my résumé, which was invaluable in my interviews and in catching the attention of recruiters." Looking to the future, Shannon has plans to further her interest in sports journalism and broadcasting. "I'm planning an internship with a sports media department to further develop my skills and gain experience. I'm pleased where life has taken me, and I owe a large part of my success to the University of Evansville."
Rachel Chambliss
Class of 2007
The small class sizes in the communication department allow students to have one-on-one time with their professors. For Rachel Chambliss, that interpersonal relationship made a difference. "My professors were readily available to help me outside the classroom. They spent time getting to know me and my goals and learning where I wanted to be after graduation."
It was the hands-on experience that Rachel feels prepared her for the career world. "It was great during job interviews to share my work experiences. Instead of saying, 'If I was in this situation, I would handle it this way.' I could actually say, 'When I was in this situation, this is how I handled it and the end results were positive.'"
Rachel is confident that the extra time she spent on projects and gaining hands-on experience outside the classroom were beneficial in landing her job as an Internet content director and reporter in West Palm Beach, Florida. "While at UE, I made the choice to spend extra time gaining experience in my field of interest at the local NBC affiliate. I'm glad I did since in the 30 stations nationwide owned by the corporation for which I work, I am the only employee who is both a reporter and Internet content director.'"
Xanni Miller
Class of 2007
After graduating from the University of Evansville, Xanni Miller landed her dream job working for an advertising agency in St. Louis, Missouri. "Working with Moosylvania Marketing has been a dream come true. I get to travel while exploring strategic and innovative ways to generate revenue and communicate with consumers for my accounts."
While at UE, Xanni enjoyed the small class environment prevalent on campus. "Because the class sizes are small, professors have the opportunity to get to know their students and recognize their strengths. Students develop strong relationships with their professors which are invaluable both personally and professionally."
"The communication department at UE fosters creativity and gets students thinking outside the box. The hands-on approach gave me practical experience to bring with me to my position. If I had to do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing."
