Exercise and Sport Science Student Profiles

Ben Menke

Ben Menke
Austin, Texas

A passion for sports brought Ben Menke to UE's exercise science program. His classes and internships provided him with the skills to share his enthusiasm with others. "My course work has been challenging, yet it has given me what I need to accurately train others and assist them in improving their overall health and wellness."

Ben's internships have given him the opportunity to put what he has learned in class into practice. "At the Children's Museum of Evansville, I put together fun and interactive activities about basic nutrition and health. Working as a camp counselor, I planned activities for kids ages 6-13 and modified sports and games to age appropriate levels. My internship at the YMCA pertained the most to my major, as I developed an adaptive soccer program and worked as a personal trainer. I really enjoy looking at the science aspect of exercise."

Ben is spending a semester in Costa Rica before entering UE's Doctor of Physical Therapy program. "I've taken numerous Spanish classes, so I'm excited about immersing myself in the language and culture. As I think about the future, I'm considering how I can combine this experience with my degree to serve others — perhaps as a physical therapist in a bilingual environment."

Jason Switzer

Jason Switzer
Huntingburg, Indiana

Jason Switzer would tell students interested in sport communication one thing: "It's an exciting major that can lead to many different opportunities." He claims the possibilities are endless. "With this major, I can work in television or radio or write for sports columns or Web sites; there aren't any limits."

At UE, Jason has explored his areas of interests through practicum and internship experiences. "I sold UE game tickets at Carson Center and wrote sportscasts for WUEV. Now, I am editing video, writing scripts, and attending area sports events for a local television station."

The decision to attend UE has, according to Jason, changed him. "I have opened my eyes to new possibilities, gained focus, and am reassured about my career choice. My professors are so helpful. They have given me internship leads and talked to me about the many opportunities available. I feel confident about my future."

Ty Legan

Ty Legan
Oak Park, Illinois

The opportunity to play NCAA Division I baseball was a key factor in Ty Legan's decision to attend the University of Evansville. "After graduation, I want to teach physical education and health as well as coach baseball. Being a member of a Division I team has taught me a lot about myself and shown me how to be a better coach."

Ty's internships and student teaching experiences have also given him additional confidence in his abilities. "I have always wanted to be a teacher, and the time I have spent with students in the classroom has prepared me very well for my career as a teacher. I believe UE's requirement for numerous classroom experiences really prepares us for careers as educators."

Fellow student-athletes and professors have influenced Ty's UE experience. "Since my freshman year, Professor Amanda Sullivan has been a fantastic resource. Her compassion, knowledge, and enthusiasm for her students and for the subject matter are inspiring. She has advised me on classes, prepared me for my internships, and guided me through student teaching." It is Ty's peers who have significantly impacted him while at UE. "My teammates and other athletes help in managing the time commitment of playing Division I sports with course work. They've been where I am and offer helpful hints. One day, I'll be able to do the same for others."

Christina Schmidgall

Christina Schmidgall
Golden Valley, Minnesota

When searching for the right college, Christina Schmidgall knew she wanted a school that supported her decision to major in athletic training as well as participate in NCAA Division I sports. "I visited several schools, yet it wasn't until I visited UE that I heard it was possible to do both."

The flexibility of the faculty members and coaches has allowed Christina to meet all of her course work expectations and fulfill her swimming commitments. "I've worked with a high school football team to gain experience with injury evaluation, injury prevention, and rehabilitation and with UE Division I athletes in the athletic training room." Christina was also able to study abroad for a summer and traveled to Prague, the United Kingdom, Amsterdam, Istanbul, and Israel.

The time spent at UE has made Christina glad she chose to attend. "My professors put so much into their teaching to ensure that their students learn. They want us to be successful." Her experiences outside of class have also changed Christina. "Since coming to UE, I am much more confident. I've gained so much knowledge and developed a point of view. I'm not afraid to share my observations."
