Music Degree Programs

The department offers the following degrees:

Auditions are required for entry into all degree programs.

The department has been a member of the National Association of Schools of Music since 1948. Entrance and graduation requirements are in accordance with published regulations of NASM.

Bachelor of Music in Music Education

The music education program provides both the musical and professional training for students to become highly qualified professional teachers. Education majors are in the classroom beginning in the first semester with continuing field placements each year. The program includes vocal, instrumental, general music, or all area emphases (vocal and instrumental). Graduates qualify for K-12 certification to teach music in Indiana schools, the surrounding states, and a number of other states that have reciprocal certification agreements with Indiana.

Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy

Students majoring in music therapy learn to use music as a tool to help people maintain or improve upon important life skills such as communication, physical movement, emotional growth, and social skills. The music therapy program is ideal for the student with a strong musical background who is also interested in health and wellness care. Music therapy students obtain clinical experience in local facilities under the direct supervision of UE music therapy faculty. A six-month internship if required following the four years of academic work. Upon completion of the internship, the graduate is eligible for board certification and membership with the American Music Therapy Association.

Double Major in Music Therapy and Music Education

This program allows students to work toward certification as a music teacher and board certification as a music therapist. All course work and student teaching are completed in five years, followed by a music therapy internship.

Music Therapy Equivalency Program

This program is for individuals who have completed a degree in a field related to music therapy (music education, psychology with extra music courses, music performance). Although no degree is awarded, the completion of this program and a six-month internship qualifies the student to take the board certification exam.

Bachelor of Science in Music Management

This program combines comprehensive studies in music with an emphasis on the business and management aspects of the music industry. Graduates are prepared through their academic background and extensive internship experiences for a wide variety of music business careers including work with record labels and distributors, artist and concert management, retail sales, or music publishing. Graduates can also choose to pursue graduate degrees in either business administration or music.

Bachelor of Science in Music

This program combines the study of the field of music with a liberal arts education. It is especially appropriate for students who are passionate about musical learning, yet want to explore other academic areas and career interests. With approximately a third of the courses being non-music electives, this program is ideal for students who may want to pursue a second major in a non-music discipline.

Bachelor of Music in Performance

The performance program prepares students for careers as performing musicians or studio teachers. It is the most music-intensive major offered, with added emphasis in applied music, theory, history, pedagogy, and literature. Under the guidance of distinguished faculty members, students gain practical knowledge and skills needed to succeed in today's competitive environment.

Suzuki Pedagogy Certificate

The Suzuki pedagogy certificate offers comprehensive teacher training in Suzuki Talent Education to violinists pursuing any degree in music. The 12-hour program includes classroom study and observation of experiences teachers followed by a supervised internship in the UE Suzuki violin program. Upon completion of the course work, participants are registered with the national Suzuki Association of the Americas.

Jazz Studies Certificate

The jazz studies certificate is a 12-hour program that includes the performance of jazz as well as jazz music analysis, composition and arrangement of jazz music, and learning the art of improvisation. The jazz studies certificate is open to any UE student who has completed the prerequisite courses and has also received permission from the instructor(s).
