Music Faculty Profile
Mary Ellen Wylie
Professor of Music
Professor Mary Ellen Wylie wants her students to develop a desire to keep learning about themselves and their profession. "I try to make the learning experience positive. I give positive reinforcement and offer guidance for those areas that need improvement."
In addition to required practicums, Professor Wylie encourages students to attend music therapy conferences as well as volunteer at agencies or find positions working with individuals who have special needs (e.g., camp for children with physical or developmental disabilities). "I think it is important for students to interact with other professionals and music therapy students. Practical experience allows students to see the interaction that takes place. Practicums and internships teach students about the interaction of people with music and with one another."
In January 2010, Professor Wylie was elected president elect of the American Music Therapy Association (AMTA), and she will begin her two year term as president in January 2012. "In my current position, I am the liaison with the Student Affairs Advisory Board (SAAB) of the AMTA. SAAB consists of student and professional members who work on issues related to the education and training of music therapy students. I feel that my position with AMTA will give UE students an intriguing look into several professional issues."
