Music Student Profiles
Fatima Chan
Hong Kong
Fatima Chan has a goal. She wants the profession of music therapy to become more available in her home country. "I chose the University of Evansville because of its music therapy program. I was at Harlaxton College and worked with a former UE faculty member who told me about the program. I did some research, and here I am."
The abundance of practicum experiences has furthered Fatima's knowledge while deepening her commitment to the field. "I've worked with the elderly and preschool students. I've also worked with children with multiple handicaps. We use movement activities set to music and select instruments based on client needs. The instruments help the children use muscle groups that may need special attention." Music therapy practicum experiences occur once a week for six semesters beginning the second semester of the freshman year.
For Fatima, "music is a part of life." She has been playing violin since the age of three, piano since age six, and performing since age five. She also teaches violin to students ages 3-8 in Hong Kong and feels lessons can help students with hyperactivity and attention deficit disorders. At UE, Fatima is a Newman Club ministry team member and a member of the University Choir, University Symphony Orchestra, and String Ensemble.
Lance Hueston
Middleburgh, New York
One reason Lance Hueston chose to attend UE was based on its music management program ranking in Rolling Stone College Guide. He chose music management because he was interested in being someone that helped make the music happen. "I knew music management was the major for me, but I was not certain what aspects of the business I wanted to pursue. This program has helped me decide."
To gain experience, Lance has worked off campus as a guitar instructor and as a recording studio intern. "These experiences have helped me further my knowledge about recording arts." On campus, Lance serves as the vice president of communication for his fraternity, was the host of the Lance and Joe radio show on WUEV, and has been a member of many ensembles including Men's Chorus, Jazz Ensemble, University Band, Guitar Ensemble, and Wind Ensemble.
