Nursing Alumni Profile
Liz Charnes
Class of 2007
Working at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, has provided Liz Charnes with numerous experiences that build upon the foundation she gained at the University of Evansville. "The first year of nursing is a huge learning curve. My UE course work and clinical rotations gave me valuable knowledge and skills needed to prepare me for the challenge."
While at Mayo Clinic, Liz has worked on the neurological rehabilitation unit. She takes care of a wide variety of patients, including individuals recovering from traumatic brain injuries, strokes, and spinal cord injuries. Some of her patients have experienced a trauma, while others are living with cancer. "I am part of a multidisciplinary approach to providing our patients quality care. The liberal arts education I received at UE enables me to care for my patients in a more holistic manner. My education, research, and study abroad experiences have made me well-rounded and encourage me to apply critical thinking skills to my occupation."
During the next year, Liz will move to Iowa and begin caring for patients at the University of Iowa. She is excited about the new possibilities and hopes to work on an oncology floor, step-down trauma floor, neurosurgery unit, or even with pediatric patients. "The best thing about nursing is the endless number of options. I truly think nursing is the best career there is."
