Physics Student Profiles
Carrie Schindler
Evansville, Indiana
Majoring in physics was an easy decision for Carrie Schindler. "I wanted a major that would challenge me. Physics has been the best fit for me. It's taught me to be more confident and how to persevere. It's supposed to be challenging, but if I didn't understand something, I always knew there was someone who could help."
Carrie's research experiences for undergraduates (REU) were beneficial in defining her career goals. "My first REU was at the University of Alabama in Birmingham where I was designing and producing implants for bone reformation. My second experience, at the University of Florida, gave me additional experience. I now know that I want to pursue a PhD in medical physics to design and develop cancer treatments to help others. Participating in the REUs guided me to the right graduate programs and allowed me to meet others in the field. Completing research has given me a step up."
Liz Badolato
Levittown, New York
The size of the physics department has provided Liz Badolato with personal interaction with the faculty. "The attention the University gives its students was exemplified during my initial visit to campus. I had an individualized itinerary devoted to my interests. I have received that same attention throughout my experience."
Studying abroad at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England, and completing a research experience for undergraduates (REU) in Benevento, Italy, provided Liz with opportunities to meet people from all over the world. "The time I spent at Harlaxton College was the best semester ever. I was able to travel and make friends in many other places. My REU in Italy was a great experience. I not only met lots of people, but I also gained research experience that I'll take with me to graduate school."
Looking ahead to graduate school, Liz is considering working toward a PhD in nuclear physics, but is still reviewing her options. "The flexibility I've had at UE with my class schedule allowed me to take a variety of courses and double major in physics and creative writing. My background has been diverse, but I know it will benefit me at graduate school and in my career. Although I'm looking forward to the next step, I will miss seeing the friends I've made at UE. The close-knit environment has been great."
