Winter Instructions and Seating
Seating for Guests
Tickets are not required. There is ample seating in the Large Gym, Carson Center so there is no limit to the number of family members or guests attending. A sign language interpreter will be available for the hearing impaired on the south side of the gym.
Seating assignments and commencement-day detail will be available in the Registrar’s Office the week of December 8. Degree candidates will receive an email reminder to pick up their seating assignment. Honor cords will also be distributed to students earning Latin Honors.
Degree candidates should report to the Small Gym, Carson Center no later than 1:15 p.m. CST. At that time the line of procession will be formed. Candidates should keep their place in the line once it is formed so they will be in the correct order as names are called during the program.
Conferring of Degrees
Tassels should be kept on the right side of the caps. Women should wear their caps throughout the ceremony. Men should remove their caps for the invocation and keep them off until the conferring of degrees. Men will remove their caps for the benediction.
When Dr. Lynn Penland, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, says, “Mr. President, I have the pleasure of presenting to you candidates for degrees”, all candidates should stand and remain standing. After President Kazee confers the degrees, the first row of candidates should then move forward as directed by a Marshal and remaining rows should be seated. A Marshal will direct each row to the platform. When your name is called, move forward, accept your diploma cover with your left hand and shake hands with President Kazee with your right hand. Return to your seat as directed by a Marshal.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, a Marshal will lead all graduates back to the Small Gym.
Diplomas for December graduates will be mailed to your home address as indicated on your WebAdvisor account. If you would like your diploma mailed elsewhere, please contact the Registrar's Office at (812) 488-2601.
Cap and Gown and Announcements
All candidates are required to wear regulation cap and gown. If you did not order a cap, gown and tassel set at the recent “Commencement Central,” please contact the Bookstore at (812) 488-2678 to order these items. Masters degree candidates need to contact the Bookstore immediately for cap, gown and hood requirements as those items need to be personally ordered by height and weight. Allow 2-3 weeks at minimum for their delivery. Bachelor caps and gowns are usually available up to the time of graduation. However, bachelor graduates should purchase these items in the Bookstore as soon as possible. This will insure that the Bookstore has adequate stock. Please contact the Bookstore to order commencement announcements.
A professional photographer will take your photograph at the time you receive your diploma cover. The photographer will contact you after commencement regarding ordering photographs.
Graduates and their families and guests are invited to a reception to be held in the Class of 59 Gallery of the Ridgway University Center. The reception, sponsored by the UE Alumni Association, will immediately follow the Commencement ceremony.
