What do University of Evansville civil engineering graduates do for a living?
In the words of alumnus Brian Varner (UE CE 2011), “It’s not every day you get to see 200 tons of steel roll out toward the river!”
The photo shows a new tugboat, fabricated by Tell City Boat Works, being lowered into the Ohio River by a carriage and rail system. The carriage assembly and hoist were designed by Brian and four other senior civil engineering students in 2010-2011 as part of their senior design project in CE 495/CE 497. Following graduation, Brian completed the design and construction of the carriage and hoist system as a structural engineer for Corn Island Shipyard, Inc. This was the first launch of a boat using the new carriage.
The successful operation occurred on November 1, 2012.
