Beyond the Classroom

UE nursing students get six full semesters of a clinical practice, beginning the fall semester of their sophomore year. Students work closely with nursing and inter-professional personnel and faculty at locations that are close to campus.

Hospitals

Clinical sites are offered in both inpatient and outpatient settings at St. Vincent Hospital, Deaconess Hospital, Deaconess Women's Hospital, Deaconess Crosspointe, Methodist Hospital, and the State Hospital. Students care for patients with complex illnesses at Evansville's two Level II trauma centers. These experiences are vital to enhance students' development in this field.

Community agencies

Students practice at same day surgery units, oncology centers, day care centers, home health agencies, and rehabilitation centers, where they witness the continuing changes being made in health care delivery. Students gain first-hand experience in caring for the client in their home and caring for a client who will go home the same day of surgery.

Community health

Students continue to build their knowledge of how to support and enhance the health of a community. At UE, students practice with the nurses at the Vanderburgh County Health Department and in the school system. Each senior class develops and implements a community service project.
