“During my sophomore year at UE, I took a global health and an epidemiology course, both of which were positive experiences. In global health, I gained a new perspective of the world by researching topics concerning malnutrition, infectious diseases, and women's health. It was really interesting to see what health issues are prevalent in countries besides the United States. It is so easy to be caught up in our own country's problems and become unaware of the health burdens that are causing countless deaths in other areas of the world. As a result of taking epidemiology, I learned that the field of epidemiology is not simply the study of different diseases. It is more concerned with health determinants, associations between behavior and disease, trends within populations, methods to control disease, etc. Anyone interested in learning how professionals collect data and work toward eradicating disease should strongly consider taking this course and also consider choosing public health as a major.”

“I have recently taken the Intro into Public Health and Public Health Epidemiology courses. Before I took them, I thought I knew the basics of public health and what it entailed. However, I have found that public health covers a wider range of ideas, actions, and techniques than I had originally thought. I learned how public health is the place where all of our preventative measures for diseases, illnesses, and environmental factors come from. I think taking any public health course and pursuing the many different careers involved is very advantageous because the measures, statistics, and ideas one learns from the courses provides a different outlook on the average actions we take for granted every day.”
