Labyrinth Expert to Speak Thursday at UE

Posted: Tuesday, April 2, 2013

Labyrinth designer and consultant Robert Ferre, whose portfolio includes two labyrinths in New Harmony, Indiana, will speak this week at the University of Evansville.

Ferre will present “The Ancient Labyrinth in a Global Society” at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 4 in Eykamp Hall, Room 251 in the Ridgway University Center. His lecture is free and open to the public.

The labyrinth is an ancient pattern found in many cultures around the world. The labyrinth design has been found on pottery, tablets, and tiles that date as far back as 5,000 years. Labyrinths are currently used worldwide as a way to quiet the mind, recover a balance in life, and encourage meditation, insight, self-reflection, and stress reduction. The practice of labyrinth walking is said to integrate the body with the mind and spirit.

Ferre is a labyrinth consultant and designer and has been a labyrinth maker and president of Labyrinth Enterprises, LLC since 1995. Now retired, he lives in San Antonio, Texas, and continues to serve as a consultant and technical advisor for the company.

Ferre has designed and built original tools with which to build labyrinths and has introduced new materials and techniques to the creation of labyrinths, especially relating to concrete. He has written numerous books and manuals about labyrinths and organized labyrinth conferences in St. Louis, Missouri, which led to the founding of the international Labyrinth Society.
