Roger Pieroni to Present Andiron Lecture on Vietnamese Francophone Novels

Posted: Monday, November 4, 2013

As part of the University of Evansville’s Andiron Lecture Series in the liberal arts and sciences, Roger Pieroni, chair of UE’s Department of Foreign Languages and associate professor of French, will present “Literary and Cultural Identities in the Vietnamese Francophone Novel” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, November 6 in Eykamp Hall, Room 252 in UE’s Ridgway University Center. His lecture is free and open to the public.

Vietnamese francophone novels – written in French between the 1920s and 1950s by Vietnamese writers – have been the focus of much research in recent years. Pieroni’s lecture will focus on two such novels: Vingt ans by Nguyen Duc Giang, and Bà-Dâm by Albert de Teneuille and Truong Dinh Tri.

“This lecture will examine the literary heritages that these novelists explored to create an original Vietnamese literary genre,” Pieroni said. “It will also examine the cultural and identity issues raised by the colonial domination that was imposed upon the Vietnamese society.”

Pieroni completed his undergraduate studies at the Université Clermont II in France, and earned his master’s degree and PhD in French literature from Indiana University. Before coming to UE, Pieroni taught French at Central College in Pella, Iowa, and at the University of Puerto Rico. He holds certification with the American Translators Association as an English-French translator and does work for various translation companies and providers. Pieroni has also published numerous articles on francophone literature.

Established in 1982, the Andiron Lectures in the liberal arts and sciences offer stimulating research, commentary, and reflection from many fields of study. Presenters are primarily drawn from the faculty of UE’s College of Arts and Sciences but also include faculty members and administrators from across the University campus and contributions from the regional community.
