How can good people rationalize destroying others? This 1976 feminist play, by British playwright Caryl Churchill, brilliantly explores gender, class, and relationships in the dangerous and desperate time of 17th century England. Harkening back to the witchcraft trials of 1645, Vinegar Tom deftly combines live music and a vivid storytelling technique to link together questions about attitudes toward women’s roles in modern-day society that persist nearly 400 years later.
