Harlaxton College unveils the Manor Mouse

Students studying at Harlaxton College, the University's campus in Grantham, England, have an exciting new venue for posting Harlaxton events, news, and happenings. The Manor Mouse is an online newspaper produced and designed by Harlaxton students to feature details and anecdotes about life at the College.

Features include audio clips, blogs, and a "So you Think you Speak English (SYTYS English)" section. This area provides translations to help American students speak the Queen's English. The latest phrase is 'green loo' which is translated to porta potty.

English Professor Publishes Book of Poetry

Rob Griffith, associate professor of English, published a book of poetry called A Matinee in Plato's Cave (Water Press & Media, 2008), available from amazon.com, waterpressandmedia.com, and the University of Evansville bookstore. In his reviews of the book, poet and critic R.S. Gwynn commented, "Violence and tenderness coexist uneasily - as well they should - in Rob Griffith's marvelous book. A housewife watches an airman fall from the sky, a bankrupt minister kills himself, a pair of woozy lovers find a bleak moment of truth in the back seat of a rusty Monte Carlo - these are the vignettes from lives hanging in the balance artfully depicted in A Matinee in Plato's Cave. Maneuvering deftly through such demanding forms as the villanelle, rondeau, and sonnet, Griffith has produced a debut volume to remember."

Griffith teaches creative writing, world literature, world cultures, and American literature at UE. He is the associate director of the University of Evansville Press, the director of the Harlaxton Summer Writing Program, and one of the founding co-editors of Measure: An Annual Review of Formal Poetry.
