UE Welcomes High School Students for Annual Linguapalooza

Published: October 07, 2008

Ever wonder what Spanish slang sounds like? Why French people love their cheese so much? Or how about if Monty Python is still funny in German?

High school foreign language students from all over Evansville and across Indiana will have the opportunity to answer those questions – and many more – at the 2008 Linguapalooza!, held October 9 on the University of Evansville campus. The 4th annual event, which will begin at 9 a.m. in UE’s Carson Center, is aimed at giving high school students an immersive, collegiate experience in understanding their foreign language of choice.

More than 85 students are expected to attend.

"This is an incredible opportunity for those high school students studying a foreign language," said Roger Pieroni, chair of UE’s Foreign Language Department. "Not only will they have the opportunity to expand their language studies by working with some of the best university professors, but through a series of exciting workshops, they also will truly immerse themselves in the culture they have chosen to study."

After a welcome in Carson Center, students will receive a tour of the UE campus – given by a UE student, in the language the students are studying (including French, German, and Spanish). They then will break into several workshops, on subjects ranging from a tour of French cheeses, to a Spanish "Jeopardy!" game, to a session on modern Germany.

After three workshops, students will move into mini-lessons with UE professors, where they are encouraged to experience a language other than the one they are studying.  Mini-lesson languages include Japanese, Chinese, Wolof, Indonesian, Russian, Portuguese and Catalan as well as French and German.  The day then will wrap up with lunch in Carson Center at 1:15 p.m.
