Business Faculty Profile

Mike ZimmerMike Zimmer PhD
Bristol-Myers Squibb Professor of Economics

"Our business in the School of Business Administration is to produce students who can do business."

"I would never discount the value of learning the basics. Every student needs to have a solid foundation. A professor’s greatest responsibility is to combine that essential information with experience. The best way to learn business is to do it.

"I began teaching at the University of Evansville in 1977. Throughout this time, I have stayed current with the students. They energize me, and I thoroughly enjoy seeing the world of economics through their eyes and creative minds.

"I put those eyes and minds to work. One of the most exciting projects my students do is their senior research. Students complete an intensive study project and then defend it at a professional conference. These conferences are a great opportunity for students to network, learn critical skills and get their careers on track. The ability to research and add value to information is critical.

"Critical skills are not limited to research projects in the United States. I recently accompanied my students to Harlaxton College for an intensive course in European business. I wanted them to experience firsthand that Europe is not just an abstract concept. They have real business issues, ones that these students are going to have to deal with when they graduate.

"Much has changed in the business world since I began teaching. Some things, such as the value of research, the need for critical thinking, and the vital role of a strong liberal arts education never will. As long as we never lose sight of the basics, and as long as eager, inquisitive, bright students keep coming into my classroom, I’ll be here to teach them."
