Chemistry Degree Programs

chemistry 2Professional Chemistry
The professional chemistry major prepares students for graduate school or for employment in the chemistry field. Many students also go on to medical, dental, or other professional schools. Advanced courses are generally small to allow maximum interaction with faculty and extensive hands-on experience in the lab. Most professional chemistry students participate in undergraduate research at Evansville or at other university graduate programs. Overall, professional chemistry is the department's most rigorous chemistry program. All graduates of this program are automatically certified by the ACS's Committee on Professional Training.

Biochemistry
Biochemistry students often plan to attend medical, dental, or graduate school in a wide number of specialized chemistry or biology disciplines. Other biochemistry students enter the workforce directly. Because students take classes in both chemistry and biology, biochemistry majors work on research projects with faculty from both departments. Most students will participate in at least one summer research project either at the University or with other graduate programs.

Basic Chemistry
Chemistry has sometimes been called the "central science." The basic chemistry major allows students to study both chemistry and a variety of other disciplines that are enriched by it. Many basic chemistry students also earn a double major in an area such as biology, environmental science, writing, or political science. Other basic chemistry students are preparing for medical, dental, or professional schools.

Chemistry-Business Administration
By combining courses in chemistry with core courses in business, chemistry-business administration students prepare for business careers in the chemical industry.

Secondary Education — Chemistry
Students interested in teaching high school chemistry earn their degrees through the School of Education. Classroom observation and teaching practice begin during a student's first year, continuing each year until the senior year culmination of a semester of student teaching.
