Lafe Meicenheimer Class of 2005 |
Debra Trusty Class of 2005 |
When Debra Trusty and Lafe Meicenheimer first entered the University of Evansville, neither planned to study ancient Greek in college. However, after meeting Professor Jim Ware, Debra and Lafe were inspired by his passion for the study of the classical languages. His energy led both students to pursue minors in classical studies. But it didn't end there, Professor Ware encouraged both to spend a semester studying abroad at College Year in Athens (CYA).
As promised, College Year in Athens enlivened Debra’s education. "One of our assignments at CYA was to translate Plato's Apology. It was a very intense class. Then we went to the agora where Socrates was put on trial. This visit made the class more realistic and inspired me to want to learn more of what happened to Socrates in his life.
Lafe confirmed Debra's experience at CYA, noting that visits to sites like the Franchthi Cave made him realize how close they were to history.
Both are now enrolled in graduate studies at Florida State University. Though they are enrolled in one of the top programs in the nation, both were well prepared for the academic demands. Speaking for both, Debra confirmed, "I can honestly say that the transition from a bachelor's to a master's degree has been much easier than expected. While the classes at FSU are very challenging, I realize I have an advantage over many other first-year graduate students, Because of UE's program focus, I arrived with a foundation and understanding of Greek and Roman archaeology that some students never had."
