Exercise & Sport Science Student Profiles

Jerad Winsett
Boonville, Indiana

Being able to study overseas, continue a love for sports, and have the opportunity to help others are factors that have made the University of Evansville the right school for Jerad Winsett. "Spending the summer at Harlaxton College was one of the best times of my life. I broadened my horizons, and I was able to see the British system of health care by touring hospitals and cardiac rehabilitation facilities."

The career services "Do What You Are" assessment and a love for sports led Jerad to the exercise science area of study. "I was uncertain as to what I wanted to study, but my assessment results coupled with my sports interests helped me choose this major. The professors have been easy to talk to and are always available if I need assistance with my course work or if I have other questions. I'm glad I made the decision to study exercise science."

Jerad likes to stay involved on campus and in the community and encourages others to do the same. "I participate in intramurals, have coached a local high school football team, and am a member of College Mentors for Kids, which has been a great way for me to help others."

Christine Wilkerson
Washington, Indiana

Choosing to major in sport communication was a natural choice for Christine Wilkerson. "I wanted a major that I could use to combine my love for sports and art as well as give me the opportunity to work with a wide array of people."

UE professors have both influenced and encouraged Christine. "My professors have given me the confidence to accomplish all that I have, especially my participation in a practicum and four internships. I've enjoyed all of these experiences, but my favorite was interning with the Notts County Magpies Football team while I was at Harlaxton College in Grantham, England. I learned so much about different cultures and was also able to further develop my communication skills."

Working with the Office of Career Services and Cooperative Education has also helped Christine decide her future path. "I belong to the UE mentor program and am matched with an alumnus who is in the industry. He has made calls on my behalf as well as given me insight into the next steps I need to take for career success. I am confident that due to my contacts, education, and work experiences I will meet my goals."

Rebekah Parker
Silver Lake, Indiana

Being a member of the University of Evansville NCAA Division I women's basketball team has taught Rebekah Parker important skills that help her in her classes and will help with her future success. "I have been able to further develop my leadership skills and be a role model to my teammates and the community. I've also made good contacts and relationships which will help me with my future plans."

Majoring in physical education and health is a perfect fit for Rebekah. "I really enjoy being around kids, and I love to help them learn and to see their joy when they succeed. My coaching endorsement will allow me to be even more involved in my students' accomplishments."

Rebekah has been able to learn by the example set by her UE professors. "Since I'm often on the road, my professors have gone out of their way to help me stay up-to-date with my assignments, and they have been flexible and approachable. It's also great to see my professors cheering at the basketball games. It shows me that they value my success both on and off the courts."

Brooke Deputy
Evansville, Indiana

For Brooke Deputy, being an athletic training student for a high school football team has been one of her favorite experiences. "I was able to combine all that I have learned in the athletic training program to evaluate injuries of the team members while being supervised by my approved clinical instructor. It was a great experience that increased my confidence in my abilities and reinforced that I'm in the right major."

Brooke is glad that both the athletic training and physical therapist assistant programs have such high standards. "Because of the emphasis on excellence, I know I'm preparing to be a great professional. Plus, with the small class sizes, I can get one-on-one assistance from my professors if needed."

Although they keep her very busy, Brooke's majors will make her very marketable after graduation. "My ultimate goal is to return athletes and other patients to their highest level of function and to eventually specialize and receive my Certificate of Recognition of Advanced Proficiency in Pediatrics. I've spent a lot of hours in the athletic training room, in clinical experiences, and studying, but I wouldn't change my major for anything!"
