Health Services Administration Student Profiles

Kinsey Foley
Muncie, Indiana

The camaraderie in the health services administration program and the dedication of the professors reinforce to Kinsey Foley that she is in the right major. "My professors have been invaluable in facilitating my learning. They care about students as individuals and encourage students to come to their offices for questions or concerns. Dr. Stroube has a wealth of information about the health care industry and is always willing to share it with his students as we prepare for our future."

Students in the HSA program are strongly encouraged to complete an internship, and Kinsey has already finished two. "Last summer I interned at a health and diagnostic center working directly with the practice administrator. I assisted with developing new policies and updating staff files. My main project was to create a comparative analysis of new patient information, total office visits, total charges, and net collections for each physician. I then presented the information to the practice administrator, physicians, and nurses to show where improvements could be made in each office."

"Now I'm working in the human resources department at a local hospital. I assist the nurse recruiter with career fairs and setting up interviews. Primarily, I collect employee surveys and evaluate the data as part of quality improvement and employee satisfaction. My internships have provided me with multifaceted experiences. I've learned how the information I've learned in class carries over into the real world, and I've made myself more marketable as a future employee."

Neil Flick
Huntingburg, Indiana

Neil Flick knew that he wanted to be in health care, but wasn't certain what area was best for him until he took the "Do What You Are" career assessment. "The career services staff worked with me to determine my strengths and areas of interest. The information from the assessment showed me the careers for which I am best suited. I met with Dr. Stroube, director of the health services administration program, and knew that HSA was for me."

The HSA program has taken Neil out of his comfort zone and given him a global viewpoint. "I took a five-week course at Harlaxton College. We traveled to various European countries to do a comparative study on the health care systems. Then, this summer, I will be interning with Mercy Ships which is docked in Sierra Leone. I will be scheduling patients for surgeries and other procedures. It will be an extraordinary learning experience."

Neil chose the University of Evansville because of its size. "The classes are small, and I have been able to get to know my professors. They work with me to help me achieve my goals."
