Clark Kimberling, PhD
Professor of Mathematics
After completing his doctorate degree at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1970, Clark Kimberling arrived at the University of Evansville to begin what has developed into a distinguished career of teaching, research and publishing. Professor Kimberling has completed more than one hundred publications in geometry, number theory, combinatorics and mathematics education, as well as articles on his other interests in music composition, music history and the history of science. In addition, he has written a book, Geometry in Action, and has contributed more than two dozen articles to the Mathematics Teacher.
Various research projects provide the inspiration for these writings, and Professor Kimberling is dedicated to including students in the creation and investigations of these projects. One of his latest endeavors focused on the Ellipse, a large elliptical garden in President’s Park south of the White House in Washington, D.C. Using his own research plus student photographs and observations, Professor Kimberling worked to prove that the park truly satisfies the mathematical definition of an ellipse.
Professor Kimberling views the research and writing opportunities he has experienced during his time at the University of Evansville as extra benefits – the real rewards for him are the students he has the chance to teach. “Evansville students have a freshness about them that makes them great to teach and work with. Evansville is different from other schools. There is an attitude and sense of school pride here that makes it an engaging place to be.”
