J.D. McKeel
Hercules, California
Confidence in his mathematical skills was something J.D. McKeel never seemed to be missing. From grade school through high school, math came easy to him. So when it was time to think about college, J.D. knew what he was going to study; he just had to decide where he would study. He had been accepted to many of the nation's most prestigious institutions, but J.D. wanted a college that would offer the type of personal attention that would help him deal with the issues of everyday life.
J.D. chose the University of Evansville. "Right from the beginning, I was impressed by the dedication of the faculty. They were approachable and made me feel like I belonged. I was encouraged to get involved and make friends with other students. My professors have recognized my talents and complimented me on my accomplishments. Whenever I've struggled with a problem, they've told me it's okay. They've turned those challenges into opportunities to grow personally. All along the way, they've been building my self-confidence."
J.D. plans to attend graduate school at the University of California - Davis to study mathematics further. He is not worried about the demands of a challenging graduate program since he has already proven himself in UE's mathematics department. With his newfound determination, those issues that life will throw at a person also don't seem so imposing.
