The department offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Music (music education, music therapy, performance), Bachelor of Science (music management) and Bachelor of Arts (music). Auditions are required for entry into all degree programs.
The department has been a member of the National Association of Schools of Music since 1948. Entrance and graduation requirements are in accordance with published regulations of NASM.
Bachelor of Music in Music Education
The music education degree qualifies students for teacher certification in Indiana, the surrounding states, and a number of other states that have reciprocal certification agreements with Indiana. The music education program includes vocal, instrumental or all area emphases (vocal and instrumental) and prepares students for certification at the K-12 levels for each chosen discipline.
Music education alumni teach in elementary, middle and high schools around the country and also at the collegiate level. Others have continued with graduate degrees and are performing in opera and orchestral positions.
Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy
The music therapy degree combines the study of music with the study of its influence on human behavior. Music therapy students obtain clinical experience in local hospitals, schools and other facilities. A six-month clinical internship is required following four years of academic work. Upon completion of the internship, the graduate is eligible to apply for board certification and for membership with the American Music Therapy Association.
Music therapy alumni hold positions in hospitals, state institutions, retirement facilities, nursing homes, and educational settings across the country. Others are in private practice.
Double Major in Music Therapy and Music Education
This program if for students interested in combining the skills and talents of music therapy and music education. All courses and student teaching are completed in five years, followed by a music therapy internship. Successful completion of both degrees qualifies students for certification in both music therapy and music education.
Music Therapy Equivalency Program
This program is for individuals who have completed a degree in a field related to music therapy (music education, psychology with extra music courses, music performance). Although no degree is awarded, the completion of this program and a six-month internship qualifies the student to take the board certification exam.
Bachelor of Science in Music Management
This program combines music and business studies for the student interested in working in the music industry. Graduates are qualified through their academic background and internship experiences for a wide range of employment opportunities in the music industry. The business core prepares graduates to work in general business or industry fields to pursue a Master of Business Administration degree. The music courses prepare graduates to pursue studio teaching, a graduate music degree, or a performance career.
Recent graduates work in operations and development positions with major orchestras and opera companies as well as with instrument manufacturers, in retail sales and in music publishing.
Bachelor of Arts in Music
This program allows students to pursue the broadest possible curriculum while maintaining music as the primary area of interest. In addition to the courses found in the University’s General Education Program, the student takes another third of his or her courses as electives chosen from campus-wide disciplines or concentrated in one specific area. Music courses constitute the remaining third of the program; they include applied music study, ensemble participation, music literature, music history, and theory courses.
Recent graduates have pursued opportunities ranging from graduate studies in performance to employment in arts organizations and education.
Bachelor of Music in Performance
The Bachelor of Music in performance prepares students to pursue solo careers, perform with major ensembles, or continue with graduate studies. It is the most music-intensive major offered, with added emphasis in applied music, theroy, literature, history, and pedagogy. Recent performance graduates are pursuing master's and doctoral degrees at prestigious institutions, teaching at the pre-college and college levels, holding sacred music positions, and performing in orchestral, opera, and musical theatre venues.
Suzuki Violin Pedagogy Music Certificate
The Suzuki pedagogy certificate is a 12-hour program that offers violinists comprehensive teacher training in Suzuki Talent Education. It includes six semesters of classroom study and observation and a minimum of a one-year teaching internship. Upon completion of the course work, participants receive a Suzuki pedagogy certificate that may be registered with the national Suzuki Association of the Americas.
Sacred Music Certificate
The Sacred Music Certificate is a 15-hour program that focuses on elements of Christian sacred music and worship (hymnody/sacred song, worship/liturgy, sacred choral literature, and conducting). It also includes an internship in a local church. Any student pursuing a music degree may enroll in the sacred music certificate program.
