Political Science Faculty Profile

Robert Dion, PhD
Associate Professor of Political Science

Robert Dion

Robert Dion enjoys teaching about American politics because it is always changing. "You never teach the same class from one semester to the next. New laws pass, new people take office, new issues emerge, and the classroom has to keep up with the world."

Professor Dion wants all of his students to realize that, no matter their area of study, government decisions will affect their lives and that they can make a difference by exercising their rights as a citizen. "I am proud to teach a subject that students will be able to use for the rest of their lives. I like to think that my classes help to demystify the political world for students and aid them in understanding what is going on, why it is going on, and what they can do about it."

Students in the political science program are encouraged to participate in hands-on learning. Professor Dion and the department promote internships, applied learning and off-campus study experiences. "There are great opportunities for meaningful growth and learning, whether by participating in an internship on Capitol Hill or by spending a semester in Latin America. Getting outside the classroom and into the real world is extremely valuable for students as they prepare for their careers." Dion believes that spending time overseas does double duty: students learn a great deal about the people and perspectives of another country which leads them to a greater understanding of their own country. "Study abroad is indispensable in today's world of increasing globalization."
