Psychology Alumni Profile

Emily Durbin
Class of 1996

Emily Durbin is an assistant professor of psychology at Northwestern University. Her research focuses on developmental psychopathology, namely, understanding the processes by which individual differences in emotionality increase the development of mood and anxiety disorders across the lifespan. Throughout her career, Durbin has relied heavily on the education and preparation she received at the University of Evansville.

"I chose to attend Evansville because students are exposed to a variety of intellectual perspectives and have exceptional access to professors. I had many opportunities to interact with faculty across a range of departments." The faculty at Evansville showed Durbin that developing ideas is not only important, but also a rewarding and exciting process. "My professors treated me as if I were a colleague, which gave me the confidence to take intellectual chances and test my abilities." The education Durbin received in Evansville's Department of Psychology enabled her to gain admission to the competitive clinical psychology PhD program at the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

Durbin is very thankful for her Evansville education and recommends students strongly consider the psychology program at Evansville. "If you wish to pursue a career in psychology (either in applied or academic settings), you will find a fertile environment for growth at the University of Evansville."
