Undergraduate Research
The Department of Psychology offers an undergraduate research program in which students have the opportunity to work directly with faculty on research projects. The department has active research programs in psychotherapy, behavioral neuroscience, jury deliberation, and language development. Students may earn academic credit for their work on research projects. Psychology students have coauthored research papers published in journals and given presentations at conferences. Selected students are given their own offices and computers for research and teaching assistantships. Travel expenses for students presenting their research at conferences may be paid for by the University. Students may also apply for grants to cover the cost of conducting research. In addition, students may be awarded $3,500 stipends and free housing in return for conducting research during the summer.
Internships and Field Experience
The University of Evansville stresses the value of real world experience in helping students decide their future educational goals and ultimate role in society. The Department of Psychology heartily supports this mission by offering an internship and field experience in psychology. It is an elective course that students may take for up to a total of nine credit hours. Each student’s experience is tailored as much as possible to satisfy the student’s personal educational goals. Typical placements have included the Evansville Psychiatric Children’s Center, St. Mary’s Medical Center, United Methodist Youth Home, area businesses, law enforcement and correctional settings, Youth Service Bureau, Southwestern Indiana Community Mental Health Center, Community Action Program of Evansville’s Head Start Program, and the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation.
