If you are considering attending seminary; are contemplating a career in ministry, counseling or social work; or desire a robust and focused humanities education as the foundation for work or further study in a variety of fields, then the University of Evansville is the place for you. You can choose to major or minor in either theological studies or biblical studies.
Biblical Studies
The major in biblical studies is an interdisciplinary, humanities-based major which focuses on the scholarly study of the biblical text. Core courses in both the Old and New Testaments concentrate on the use of contemporary methods and tools of biblical exegesis to illumine the text. Students also gain facility in both biblical languages (Greek and Hebrew), which enables them to read and interpret the biblical text and other ancient texts in the original languages. Additional courses are taken in theology, ethics, religion, history, archaeology and philosophy. The program is thus truly interdisciplinary, drawing together the study of theology, ancient language, literature and history into a focus on the biblical text and its message.
Theological Studies
The theological studies major focuses on the academic study of religion, centered in the texts and traditions of Christianity. Students gain an understanding of biblical texts, Christian traditions, and Christian theological and ethical thinking in their historical and contemporary contexts. The major also provides engagement with broad religious issues, questions of faith and the spiritual quest, including work with religious traditions outside Christianity.
