Frequently Asked Questions

The University of Evansville in Evansville, Indiana, warmly welcomes international students. The following information explains how to apply for admission and also answers many of the common questions international students ask.

What degrees are offered at the University of Evansville?

A full description of the degrees and programs of study at the University of Evansville are available on the academics pages of this site.

What happens if I change my mind about my major or if I do not know which area I want to study?

No problem! American education allows students to change their minds about their majors or courses of study.

What if I want to apply to Harlaxton College, UE's British Campus?

Unless English is your first language and/or you have had at least a year of university work in English, you should first attend UE before going to Harlaxton College for a semester. Harlaxton is not a degree-granting institution; it is a study abroad site.

How do I apply for admission to UE?

Submit the International Application for Undergraduate Admission. Be sure to indicate which name is your family name, and be sure to use that same name for every document. You may fill out an application using this online form.

You may pay your application fee upon arrival if you live in a country where the currency is non-convertible or if you do not have access to a check in American dollars or a credit card.

  • Include one passport-sized photo and a copy of the front page of your passport (photo page).

  • Send us your academic records. We need official (certified) copies of all records from secondary school and post-secondary institutions. A certified English translation should be attached.

  • Take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). UE's TOEFL code is 1208. You must take the TOEFL examination even if you have satisfactorily completed college-level composition classes elsewhere in the United States or abroad. Information about testing dates, places, and costs is available from TOEFL, Box 899-R, Princeton, New Jersey 08541 U.S.A.

    • You must score at least 500 (paper based) or 61 (internet based) or 173 (computer based) to receive unconditional admission. If you score less than 500, you may receive provisionary acceptance, pending satisfactory completion of the 500 minimum.

    • If you do not receive the minimum TOEFL score required by the University, you may choose to start at the University of Evansville's Intensive English Center. (For more information about the Intensive English program, write: Director, IEC, University of Evansville, 1800 Lincoln Avenue, Evansville, Indiana 47722, U.S.A. or e-mail iec@evansville.edu).

    • Students who are unable to provide TOEFL results will be required to take a University-administered TOEFL upon arrival on campus. Failure to meet the minimum requirement of 500 will necessitate enrollment in the Intensive English Center until the appropriate score is obtained.

    • The TOEFL is used to make a preliminary estimate of an applicant's ability in English. Upon arrival at the University before registration for classes, all students whose native language is not English are required to take another English placement examination.

  • Arrange for a letter of recommendation from a principal, teacher, or person familiar with your academic performance.

  • Include financial documentation of your family's ability to pay costs incurred at the University.

    • The Affidavit of Support should be submitted by the person or agency who will be financially responsible for paying your bills while you are at the University.  Each sponsor must complete an affidavit.

    • Click here to download an Adobe Acrobat Reader (PDF) file of the I-20 Application and Affidavit of Support Form.

    • A current bank statement showing a balance that will cover school expenses for a minimum of one academic year as well as financial statements for the prior two months indicating deposits are being made regularly into the sponsor's account.

  • Students who have studied at another U.S. university should submit the Student Advisor's Report Form.

What are my chances of being accepted?

The University looks for international students who have successfully completed their country's full sequence of preparatory studies and examinations, who have strong academic achievements, who are fluent in English, and who have adequate financial arrangements (as required by law).

Do I need to take the SAT and/or Achievement Tests?

If you intend to participate on a Division I athletic team, you must take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Your eligibility is based on a combination of your high school GPA and SAT test scores as determined by the NCAA clearinghouse. Other students are not required to take the SAT, but it is recommended. A good performance on the SAT will enhance your chances for a scholarship.

What are my chances for a scholarship?

The University of Evansville offers financial assistance to international students who are exceptionally strong academically. Unfortunately, the University is unable to offer full scholarships. Because you must be able to pay for much of your education yourself, you will need to have sufficient financial resources to supplement your scholarship. The guidelines for scholarships are nearly the same for international and U.S. students.

You may receive University of Evansville money from only one source.

If you qualify for several UE scholarships, you will be awarded whichever is of greatest financial value.

  • As an international student, you are eligible for consideration of an Overseas Scholarship.  U.S. students are eligible for Departmental Scholarships. The Overseas Scholarship and Departmental Scholarships are essentially the same scholarship designed to serve two different audiences. You will be considered for the Overseas Scholarship, not the Departmental Scholarship. The Overseas Scholarships range from $4,500 - $13,000 per year.

  • If you are a United Methodist, you may be considered for a United Methodist Scholarship.

How much money will I need?

You must show proof of ability to pay for tuition, room and board, activity, and registration fees, as well as for your personal expenses. This amounts to about $35,572 a year. If you receive a scholarship, that amount will be subtracted from $35,572.

The following is an approximate breakdown of expected expenses. Click here for a complete breakdown.

  • Tuition for the academic year, beginning in late August and ending in mid-May, is $23,710.

  • The cost for room (all double occupancy based on middle price) and board in the residence halls is approximately $7,550.

  • All freshmen (students attending any university for the first time) are required to live in the residence halls.

  • An additional $3,532 is needed for books, medical insurance, and personal expenses.

  • Remember: If you intend to attend classes during the summer, you will need additional funds for summer tuition, housing, food, and personal expenses.

How much money can I earn by working?

Not enough! Do not count on working to pay for your education. Campus jobs are limited and community jobs are generally prohibited in the United States.  Even if you get an on-campus job, minimum wage in the U.S. is $5.25 an hour. You would not be able to work enough hours to finance your education.

Must I have health insurance?

Yes, it is mandatory. You may not register for classes until you show proof of medical insurance. Even with medical insurance, you may still incur minimum medical expenses above the insured amount, which is one of the reasons we require the extra $1,500 above the cost for tuition and room and board.

If I am a transfer student, how do I receive credit for previous course work?

Provide complete documentation (in English), including a transcript (record of course or grade), for each course.

We often will also need course outlines (in English), lists of required readings, and any additional material you can furnish about the courses (number of hours spent in the classroom each week, etc.).

What is the shortest amount of time I can spend at UE and still graduate?

You must take a minimum of 63 hours in order to receive a degree from the University of Evansville. Most transfer students are here a minimum of two years.

How soon will I know whether or not I have been accepted?

As soon as we have your application, TOEFL, academic records, and financial documents, we will move quickly to determine your admission status. You should hear from us 15 days after your file is complete.

What are your deadlines?

Although we will do all we can to help you, it is best for us to have your material before July 1 for an August entry and before November 1 for January entry. We can make the admission decision expeditiously, but we need time to mail you the I-20, and you need time to get your visa.

How do I get a visa?

  • Go to an American Embassy or Consulate.

  • Take all of your original academic documents and financial statements along with our letter of acceptance and I-20.

  • The consular official will base his/her decision on many factors: your previous ability as a student as an indicator of your ability to succeed at an American university; your financial documents including bank statements, business documents, and tax statements; and your intentions to return to your home country.
