By Anton Chekhov
Adapted by Tom Stoppard
Directed by Amelia McClain ’03
Set on a rural estate in the tranquil Russian countryside at the end of the 19th century, this melancholy comedy introduces us to an assemblage of fascinating characters dissatisfied with their lives. Some desire love. Some desire success. Some desire artistic genius. However, they are all embroiled in passions that are often paradoxical, sometimes destructive, but always recognizably human. Tom Stoppard’s masterful adaptation of Chekhov’s best-loved play has been heralded for its shining prose and unwavering loyalty to the playwright’s vision of comedy within pathos.
