Certificate in New Testament Greek

Through the University of Evansville’s Certificate in New Testament Greek, clergy, church professionals, and interested laypeople have the opportunity to gain thorough mastery of ancient Greek, the original language of the New Testament, at a fraction of the cost of the same courses taken for academic credit. Courses may be taken in the classroom or online.

The University of Evansville’s Certificate in New Testament Greek is designed for adults seeking to grow in their knowledge of the Bible for personal and ministerial enrichment. In a series of five courses, you will progress from the basics to advanced work in ancient Greek, the original language of the New Testament. You will learn how to use your Greek skills to enrich interpretation of the text, and you will gain facility in the use of scholarly tools for New Testament study. Upon completing the certificate, you will be able to read and study the New Testament in its original language with skill and confidence.

The courses and certificate may also be taken for academic credit, either on campus or online. Students may complete the five-course certificate (and up to six courses total) without formal enrollment in the University.

You earn the certificate in New Testament Greek by taking the following five courses:

Greek 111: Introductory Greek I
Greek 112: Introductory Greek II
Greek 211: Intermediate Greek
Greek 212: Ancient Greek Prose
Greek 371: New Testament Greek Exegesis

Students planning to take the courses on campus should enquire regarding the start date of the course in which they are interested. Online students may register for and begin the courses at any time, and may take each course at their own pace.

Certificate in Classical Greek
Available for personal enrichment or academic credit

The classical Greek certificate focuses on the prose, poetry, and drama of classical Greek antiquity. Students progress from the basics to advanced work in authors such as Plato, Euripides, Lysias, Sappho, and others. To earn the certificate, students take the following six courses:

Greek 111: Introductory Greek I
Greek 112: Introductory Greek II
Greek 211: Intermediate Greek
Greek 212: Ancient Greek Prose
Two from: Greek 351: Attic Greek Prose; Greek 411: Greek Drama; Greek 421: Greek Poetry

The Instructor

James Ware, PhD instructs each course. Ware holds a master’s in Greek and Latin Classics from Washington University, and a master’s and PhD in New Testament from Yale University. He has over 25 years of experience teaching ancient Greek to both college and seminary students.

Certificate in New Testament Greek

$249 per non-credit course.
Five courses are required to earn the certificate.
For academic credit, $335 per credit hour (each course is three credit hours).

Certificate in Classical Greek

$249 per non-credit course.
Six courses are required to earn the certificate.
For academic credit, $335 per credit hour (each course is three credit hours).
