Committing to Diversity Awareness

LaNeeça Williams is the Chief Diversity Officer for UE. She also teaches a social responsibility course entitled Anti-Bias Training and sits on several campus and community committees, including the President’s Cabinet. Originally from Evansville, Williams wanted to come back home to be closer to family members. She earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Indiana State University and spent time working for the Vigo County Minority Health Coalition, Inc., Indiana State University, and Colorado State University-Pueblo.

Leaving a Strong Impact

Improving the overall awareness of differences among people is one of Williams’s main goals for UE. She wants to be a visionary that leads this campus to a better understanding of multiculturalism. “I want to leave a legacy that this campus is more comfortable at talking about social issues that matter,” she said. “I hope to encourage people to not afraid to take action to make a difference in the world for all people.”

Embrace Student Leadership

Williams mentors several students at the University of Evansville. The mentor/student relationship transcends color, age, sex, religion, and sexual orientation for her. She is able to help cultivate leaders on UE’s campus through dialogue and encouraging them to do their best, to be impeccable with their word, and to stand for what they truly believe through their actions. “I embrace and appreciate the professional relationships with each student who allows me to be a part of their journey at UE,” she said.

More Cultural Appreciation

In the future, Williams wants to establish an even larger effort to help our campus develop and maintain an environment that celebrates diversity and inclusion. There are still so many opportunities to collaborate on issues of diversity. She wants to see support grow for students learning outside the classroom. “I hope to establish programs that help our students become more global in their thinking and increase innovative classroom projects and social events,” she said.
