Exposing Students to a Global Community
“We are already there in terms of providing a global community, but the rest of the world needs to know how international and distinguished we are.”
Wesley Milner, PhD
Professor of Political Science
Executive Director for International Programs
Wesley Milner is the executive director for international programs and professor of political science at UE. He earned his BA in economics and German at the University of Texas-Austin and his PhD in political science and international relations at the University of North Texas. Before coming to UE, he worked as a national security officer for Advanced Power Technologies Inc. and as professor at a few universities, including UE’s Harlaxton College. Milner said he was looking for a smaller liberal arts institution where he could have a bigger impact on students when he came to UE.
Rising to the Challenge
In and out of the classroom, Milner wants to help students acquire the skills needed to empower them to truly affect positive change in the world. He provides opportunities that push students to move beyond their own world and consider the complexities of the twenty-first century challenges. Milner said, “The current young adult generation is up for the task, but they need to bold enough to confront these issues.” The Model UN course at UE is a great opportunity for students to do just that. Discussing world issues and coming up with the best possible solutions is a challenging task, but a worthwhile experience to have as an undergraduate student.
Erin Lewis was a student who had a challenging journey, Milner recalled. He said she had a passion that was there but not the best discipline at first. Seeing the transformation she has made with her multifaceted accomplishments, Milner definitely proud of her. For faculty members like him, it is nice to see students who may not have had the easiest time in college prevail and find their footing with more experiences.
Future Endeavors at UE
The University of Evansville has potential for some significant progress in the future based on the direction we are trying to go, according to Milner. “We are already there in terms of providing a global community, but the rest of the world needs to know how international and distinguished we are.” Scholars for Syria is a recent example to our approach for internationalization. Milner said being a more international institution attracts students who are seeking a global education with a diverse community. “Even with current issues going on in the world, UE continues its international education programs on campus and through study abroad opportunities. That’s incredible.”
