Local Internship with a Global Reach
When Will Knights started participating in a GAP Program at UE, he thought it would be good to have some real world experience in an academic capacity. “It was great to gain some insight as to how a large corporation operates and try to offer some consulting advice from a student’s perspective,” he said.
His GAP project team worked with Berry Plastics, a global plastics manufacturer headquartered right here in Evansville, just a few miles from campus. He said it was a lot of work, “but the more I immersed myself in the class, the more I learned and was able to take away from it.”
Opportunities Grow into other Opportunities
The final project in the class was a presentation in front of a few vice presidents and other employees from Berry Plastics, as well as executive faculty members from UE. “It was my first real presentation to people who held this much importance in their jobs,” said Will. The presentation was a huge success, and soon after they had finished, Berry’s vice president of marketing offered Will an internship in the Global Marketing division. During his time there, he worked on projects including focus groups, blog posts, presentation reconstruction, research, and preparation for conventions. His experience has shown him the ins and outs of an extremely large corporation, and he knows that the first-hand experience he received will prove invaluable in the future.
“This was exactly the internship I was looking for to help me prepare for the real world, and it all started because I took a class.”
Preparation for Your Best Success
Between opportunities for internships and leadership positions in student organizations, opportunities for growth and development are everywhere. “UE is a place that encourages, and propels you to be your best,” said Will.
He came to UE with the goals of getting good grades and working toward being a leader on campus, knowing that those goals would lead to good things after graduation. “I want to have influence and know that at the end of the day, I made a difference,” he said.
“UE has helped me see that I have a lot of potential, and I am going to be able to do great things after I get my diploma.”
