A Chance to Work with a NASA Astrophysicist

“At UE, you really get to know your professors. There are no teaching assistants teaching classes here.”

Majors: Physics and Mathematics

Finding the right fit

Before deciding that the University of Evansville was the right place for him, AJ Dick considered a large state institution. He soon realized that the large, public school wouldn’t be a good fit.

“The state school was too big for me,” he explained. “And UE ended up being less expensive once you added in scholarships.”

One of the things AJ likes best about the University of Evansville is its small size and friendly, close-knit community.

“At UE, you really get to know your professors. There are no teaching assistants teaching classes here.”

That close relationship goes beyond the classroom. Professors at UE mentor their students offer encouragement, and help them to succeed.

Associate professor of physics John Stamm, AJ’s research project advisor, connected AJ with Douglas Rowland, astrophysicist in the Space Weather Laboratory of the Heliophysics Division at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.

“I talked to Dr. Rowland on the phone weekly, and he pointed me in the right direction for the research,” AJ recalled. “I worked with him on computer simulations of the atmosphere probe he was using.”

AJ also did a project for Senior Seminar on using artificial intelligence to predict the weather. “The topic is really cool,” he said “There’s a lot of interest in that now.”

Help with planning for the future

After he completes his undergraduate degree, AJ plans to go on to graduate school. His goal is to find a career that would allow him to do research and perhaps teach as well.

“My professors have been very helpful with the grad school process.” he said. “They know exactly what physics grad schools are looking for and the steps you need to take to apply and be accepted.”
