Exploring the World

“I connected right away to the sense of community at UE.”

Holyn Marshall

Class of 2019
Major: Management

Professors take a personal interest

It was a conversation with professor of history Daniel Gahan during Holyn Marshall’s first visit to UE’s campus that convinced her that the University was the right choice for her.

"Dr. Gahan and I had an hour and a half long conversation,” she recalled. “We just talked about me and what I wanted out of school and out of life in general. I knew then that it was true what I had heard - UE faculty take a personal interest in the students. That was the norm, not the exception.”

That realization has deepened during her time as a UE student.

Holyn is a member of UE’s Women’s Soccer team and is impressed that her professors regularly come to her games. “It wouldn’t be a big deal in a big school when everyone goes to the games, but it’s a big deal here,” she said. “And they attend student events too, and bring their families.”

A magical study abroad experience

Holyn loves the fact that the UE Guarantee promises that every student will have the chance to study abroad, as she did for a semester at Harlaxton College

While at Harlaxton, Holyn took advantage of the opportunity to travel extensively in Great Britain and Europe.

"I checked many a country off my travel list!” she said. “You can go on trips organized by the school or do independent travel. But even for independent trips, the school helps you with details and travel tips.”

Cities and countries she visited while studying abroad include London, Prague, Paris, and Greece.

She has magical memories of a trip she took to Nice, France, where her group “stumbled upon a carnival. It was a random, perfect event. It was beautiful weather and there was a flower parade. And a light parade that night.”

Holyn describes Harlaxton as a perfect home base from which to “venture out and travel. You come back and share your adventures with everyone else. I met a great group of people at Harlaxton. We still keep in contact.”
