Finding the Right Mentor

“I’m always thinking – I get to do this – not that I have to do this. To get to do what I’m doing – it’s just incredible.”

Justin Slattery

Class of 2016
Majors: Creative Writing, English, Philosophy

Pursue the degree that fits YOU

Justin, who is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, has three majors: philosophy, creative writing, and English. After graduation, he intends to go on to graduate school and is considering practicing law, or perhaps becoming a professor of law or philosophy. He has found that he is able to explore all those possibilities while still an undergraduate at UE.

Finding the right mentor

At UE, faculty are not just educators standing behind a podium. They take an interest in their students, guiding and preparing them for successful careers. The relationship between Justin and professor of cognitive science Tony Beavers is a perfect example of that positive, personal interaction.

“This mentor relationship is what I wanted when I came here,” says Justin. “Dr. Beavers is an incredible academic. I have a lot of respect for him. I consider him not just a teacher but a friend. He is truly what a mentor should be.”

Their connection began when Justin took a cognitive science class with Beavers as a freshman.

“He saw my interest and talked to me about maybe being a cognitive science major,” Justin explains. “As time went on he suggested philosophy might be more my area.”

Explore the World

Beavers’s encouragement and support continued even when Justin spent a semester studying abroad at Harlaxton College, near Grantham, England.

“There I was,” Justin recalls, “in that wonderful, crazy old manor, doing an independent study with Dr. Beavers by Skype!” “Going to Harlaxton was just incredible,” he adds. “I changed so much after my time there. The professors were wonderful. I saw three Shakespeare plays while I was there. I saw Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre while I was there. I couldn’t have been happier with my experience.”

Beyond the Classroom

While his class work keeps Justin busy, he also participates in various campus organizations, plays in intramurals, and takes part in Greek life. He even volunteers at the Vanderburgh County Humane Society.

Justin says he is amazed at all the opportunities he has found at UE.

“I’m always thinking – I get to do this – not that I have to do this. To get to do what I’m doing – it’s just incredible.”
