Finding her Passion in the Field

“UE is filled with fantastic professors, faculty, staff, and administrators!”

Class of 2016
Major: Biology

Why UE Stands Apart

Maggie Lawrence, a biology major here at UE, had many reasons for choosing the University of Evansville. It was close to home, but not too close. Every course was led by a teacher who was both helpful and challenging. And, let’s not forget the bright red cherry on top, that scholarship! While all of these factors played a role in Maggie’s decision, what really set UE apart from her other choices were the professors. “We have first rate professors,” Maggie said. “I wouldn’t want to learn from anyone else!”

Taking the Steps to Decide Her Future

Maggie had plenty of opportunities to get to know the faculty here at UE, through her classes and with her work study job with UE’s Center for Career Development. “I have really great relationships with nearly every professor I have had a class with.” One such relationship was with Dr. Cris Hochwender, associate professor of biology. “Dr. Hochwender has always been a supporter, and my biggest critic, but he has really helped me to grow and become better in areas that I was lacking.”

The professors at UE genuinely care about their students’ education, but the opportunities to learn and experience go beyond the classrooms. It was her internship at John James Audubon State Park that Maggie believed really helped her decide her future. “My internship was an awesome opportunity to help out the local community and really know that I am getting a degree in something that I love to do!”

Choosing UE

When it comes to choosing a college, Maggie offered this simple advice: “Go with your gut!” The college experience is more than just classes and homework and exams, it is feeling a connection with the campus and the other students; it is a sense of belonging. “It may be hard to decide after just one visit, but trust yourself, you’ve got this!”
