Destination UE

A Place to Explore Your Interests and Discover Your Talents

“ESPN3 has a lot to offer. There are all kinds of areas where you can get experience. I worked in the truck, on the audio board, broadcasting. I got to be a sideline reporter. They said ‘Do you want to try this?’ And I did.”

Matt Reed

Class of 2018
Majors: Sports Communication

Gaining Skills and Experience Right Away

Matt Reed hit the ground running as a freshman at the University of Evansville. The UE graduate said that he began learning important skills and gaining more self-confidence right away.

“You start getting experience as soon as you walk into the communications department,” explained Matt, who was a sports communication major. “I was able to start at the radio station (91.5 FM WUEV) that first year. Some of my friends at other universities were upperclassmen before they ever got to do what I did as a freshman.”

Opportunity to Try New Things

In addition to serving as WUEV’s sports director, Matt had the opportunity for other communications practicums and internships in the communications field.

He wrote for UE’s student-run Crescent Magazine, winning an award for his work at the 2018 Indiana Collegiate Press Association annual competition.

He had an internship with a sports writing website, writing two articles a week following the progress of an NFL team and a college football team.

“I knew I could do broadcasting but didn’t know that I could do sports writing. During this internship I developed that ability.”

Working with ESPN3

In addition, Matt served a practicum with ESPN3 at UE, which is almost completely student run.

“ESPN3 has a lot to offer. There are all kinds of areas where you can get experience. I worked in the truck, on the audio board, broadcasting. I got to be a sideline reporter. They said ‘Do you want to try this?’ And I did.”

Learning in a Real World Environment

“You sometimes make mistakes but you learn from that and it builds your confidence. In fact, you learn the most when nothing goes right. Let’s say you start setting up two hours before a game starts. Then 10 minutes before it begins, your equipment crashes. You can’t say ‘I’ll try again next week’ because people are counting on you. You find out how you do under pressure.”

Ready for Success

Matt, currently a US football podcast producer intern at USA Football, is considering a career in video production or university sports information. Whatever career path he chooses, his UE experience will help him succeed.
