Professors Who Go the Distance

“The biology department is like a family”

Major: Biology

UE Campus is Like a Family

Natalie Walsh’s first visit to campus was on a scholarship day. She was not sure UE was the right fit at first, but once she got to campus, she felt like she had come home. “The biology department is like a family,” she said. “Everyone is quite friendly. It was neat to see how everyone cares how you’re doing here at UE.”

Getting to Know People

The Admission Ambassador program was a great way for Natalie to get to know people and promote what UE has to offer. One of the OLs Natalie met during her freshman year was an admission ambassador and encouraged her to apply to the program.

Natalie was also given the opportunity to do chemistry research related to medicine with Dr. Andy Lampkins, assistant professor of chemistry and biochemistry. They both worked toward developing a new type of cancer drug that would be sustainable in the future.

Natalie is also grateful for her experiences in Greek life. Her sorority has become a network of friends and alumni members who are there for her no matter what. “It is important to develop those relationships further because those connections are just as critical as academic success,” she said.

Amazing Research Opportunity

Harlaxton College in Grantham, England, was a great chance for Natalie to experience the world. She also studied in Costa Rica for 17 days for a biology course on tropical ecology. A group of biology students along with a few professors spent 17 days adventuring through Costa Rica, doing research on reforestation. Natalie thought it was great to see something related to the process of recreating life through plants.

Professors Who Go the Distance

One of the professors that has mentored Natalie throughout her college years is Dr. Andy Lampkins. Dr. Lampkins lets non-chemistry majors participate in chemistry research, which Natalie appreciates.

Dr. Noah Gordon has been a great influence because of the trip to Costa Rica. Dr. Gordon took the time to spend a few weeks with students doing research that ultimately benefited students but he did not have to do.

A Network That Helps You

“Find some place that feels like home, and make sure you feel comfortable. You have a network that will help you here at UE so use it.”
