My name is Gabi Tom and I am originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil. I graduated from UE in May of 2017 with a Bachelor's degree in International Studies and Political Science. My experience at UE was nothing but fantastic. The University has exceeded my expectations in every aspect of my college experience. I found at UE a place to call home, people to call friends, and a faculty and staff to call family. During my four years at UE I had the opportunity to intern in different parts of the country such as Washington DC and North Carolina, I had the opportunity to bring the largest humanitarian organization to campus, the UNICEF Campus Initiative, amongst other opportunities. UE not only provided me with high-quality education and fabulous professional experiences, but it also enabled me to grow as a human being and become a thoughtful caring global citizen. The University of Evansville will always be my home away from home.

My UE experience contributes to me being resilient; I can stay open to the world and keep a bright outlook on life in spite of obstacles I encounter.

I travel or UE friends visit me at least a few times every year. So we make time for being reminiscent about the good old days. What I've recently found is that the time I spent at UE really made me have faith in people. From housekeeping to the president of the school, I can recall countless times when UE staff helped me out! I constantly remind myself that even if I don't live on the same continent, I can find that same selfless genuine warmth wherever I go.

On a more practical note, the liberal arts education I received taught me how to study and quickly understand new concepts, which is an excellent skill for anyone in the 21st century.

This is only my second year at UE, and it already feels like home. As an international freshman, the time came when I had to deal with home sickness and that home for me was more than an ocean away. The fact that my IOL's, the UE staff and the University's community, in general, welcomed me with open arms was one of the main reasons that I was able to adjust faster and easier in the new environment and to my new life. I enjoy how small the classes are and that I get to know my professors and advisors personally. I get to have more one-to-one time with them, both in and out of the classroom, and I am grateful for the fact that they are always willing to help when I need it. Finally, as a student athlete, I am thankful for all the people who work with our team in the athletic department, my coaches, and my professors, as their encouragement, support, and understanding have truly made a difference in my everyday life.

Here at UE, the academic environment shapes my intellectual outcomes through challenging courses and collaborative professors. This is critical for my future success.

Although I am a political science major, I have the opportunity to take liberal arts and science courses like chemistry, law, music, and foreign language. Having an understanding of other elements of education is necessary in expanding my general knowledge. From the beginning, my professors at UE have challenged me, and they have also provided me with the guidance necessary to succeed.

My involvement in different clubs at UE has broadened my horizon and worldviews. Participating in different clubs makes UE a special place. Through these activities, I am able to share my culture while learning about others. Sometimes balancing my time between clubs and class can be challenging, but I learned the skill of time management.

My love for music, especially singing, has been further propelled by amazing professors who endlessly offer help and advice whenever I need it. Some go beyond what a professor is required to do, and I am more than thankful that these professors are here for me. University Choir and Kantorei are the two major ensembles that I am in. These are great platforms for students to showcase their talents, as well as to learn to work closely as part of a team. We also get opportunities to perform off-campus, sometimes in professional groups, to prepare ourselves for the future.

Because of UE’s teacher-student ratio, we get more attention from our professors, enhancing our learning experience. I also appreciate the diversity that we have on campus and the support we get from our international coordinators, who make UE feel like home away from home. Thanks to UE, the people I've met, some I'd call friends for life, have all contributed in making my study abroad experience great.

The main reason I chose UE was because they offer my major, management information systems. Another reason the small classes, which allows students to communicate easily with professors. UE has a great business school that has helped me expand my communication skills. The professors of the business school give their students projects to work on with classmates, which creates an opportunity for students to work as a team.

I've been in Evansville for a year and half. When I came to UE for the first time, I made a lot of friends at international orientation. Most of them came from different countries, such as Brazil, South Korea, the United States, and many more. This experience taught me about different cultures and traditions. I am very pleased with my UE education and the friends I have made along the way.

One has many ideas about how college is going to be: classes, and life in general. But when it comes to leaving your country and experiencing a different culture, you don’t know what to expect.

As an international student majoring in biology, I must say that from the moment I arrived at UE, my expectations were exceeded, especially in regard to my major. Classes are challenging, and professors are involved in your education inside and outside the classroom starting from the first day of classes. Even though this is my first semester here, I feel that being away from home during this time has helped me grow as a person, and I’m really looking forward to continuing my college experience at UE for the next four years.
