About the Artwork
The University of Evansville Theatre has partnered with Steve Alpert to raise funds for the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation. A print of “Legacy” will be auctioned at the end of the University of Evansville Theatre’s production of THE STEADFAST, which was inspired by the painting. All proceeds from the auction will support the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation.
“Legacy,” depicting foot soldiers from the eight uniform eras of the U.S. Army…can you name them? Inspired by a collaboration with Jan Scruggs, Founder and then President of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation, “Legacy” inspired the stage play, THE STEADFAST, by Mat Smart, about the effects of war on soldiers and their families.
About the Artist
Steve Alpert is a painter from New York who has worked in oil for more than fifty years. Before becoming a full-time artist, he spent many years working in television as an editor, producer, and director. His paintings include landscapes, seascapes, portraiture, and abstract work. A significant part of his practice focuses on contemporary American military subjects. Through the sale and donation of these works, nearly $600,000 has been raised to support veterans and their families, including contributions to the Children of Fallen Patriots Foundation and the Fisher House Foundation.
Benefitting Organization: Children of Fallen Patriots
Behind every Fallen Patriots scholarship is a story of loss, perseverance, and hope. While the Children of Fallen Patriots mission centers on educational support, our work goes far beyond tuition. They walk alongside our scholars from high school through college and trade school—and beyond—providing not only scholarships and counseling, but pre-college support, career guidance, and a community that understands and honors their sacrifice.
About the Show: THE STEADFAST
The University of Evansville Theatre continues its 2025–2026 season with THE STEADFAST, by Mat Smart ’01. This production opens at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Mar. 20, in Shanklin Theatre. Additional performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Mar. 21, 26, 27, and 28, and at 2 p.m. on Mar. 29.
Spanning eight American wars and more than two centuries of history, THE STEADFAST is a thrilling, time-shifting theatrical event about courage, conviction, and the cost of serving one's country. Inspired by Steve Alpert's painting “Legacy," this striking play connects the lives of eight soldiers—from the American Revolution to the aftermath of 9/11—through moments of bravery, resistance, grief, and hope.
THE STEADFAST is a powerful tribute to those who serve—and those who dare to question the meaning of heroism itself. This is American history as you've never seen it: alive, fractured, and fiercely human.
The “Legacy” Project
UET’s Rouge and Peasant Aces Theatre ChangeLab class has created an immersive audiovisual experience featuring artwork by Steve Alpert and original composition by junior theatre performance major Kurt Sparks. This 10-minute video will play in a loop 45 minutes prior to and post the curtain of every performance of THE STEADFAST.
