Accreditation Objectives and Outcomes

In accordance with the criteria established by the Engineering Accreditation Commission and Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, the computer science faculty have established the following program educational objectives and student outcomes for students majoring in electrical engineering, computer engineering, and computer science at the University of Evansville. The purpose of these objectives and outcomes is to ensure that graduates of the program are adequately prepared to enter the practice of their respective discipline. Recognizing that the performance of students and graduates is an important consideration in the evaluation of an institution, a system of ongoing assessment is conducted by the faculty to continuously improve the effectiveness of these programs.

"Graduates" are defined as computer science alumni within 3-5 years of graduation

"Students" are defined as computer science students at the time of graduation from the University of Evansville

The electrical engineering, computer engineering, and computer science programs share three educational objectives. Each objective is supported by the student outcomes established by the EAC or CAC as shown.

For the electrical engineering and computer engineering programs:

  • Objective 1: Graduates will be engaged in a professional career and/or continued or advanced study in their chosen field. This implies that graduates will recognize the value and necessity of lifelong learning.
    • Outcome 1a. Students will have an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics. (ABET EAC Outcome 1)
    • Outcome 1b. Students will have an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies. (ABET EAC Outcome 7)
  • Objective 2: Graduates will be engaged in applications of problem solving and communications skills for a wide variety of problems in engineering and/or computer science either as individuals or in teams.
    • Outcome 2a. Students will have an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives. (ABET EAC Outcome 5)
    • Outcome 2b. Students will have an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors. (ABET EAC Outcome 2)
    • Outcome 2c. Students will have an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences. (ABET EAC Outcome 3)
    • Outcome 2d. Students will have an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions. (ABET EAC Outcome 6)
  • Objective 3: Graduates will be active participants in a local, national, or global engineering or computer science community.
    • Outcome 3a. Students will have an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts. (ABET EAC Outcome 4)

For the computer science program:

  • Objective 1: Graduates will be engaged in a professional career and/or continued or advanced study in their chosen field. This implies that graduates will recognize the value and necessity of lifelong learning.
    • Outcome 1a. Students will have an ability to apply computer science theory and software development fundamentals to produce computing-based solution. (ABET CAC/CS Outcome 6)
    • Outcome 1b. Students will have an ability to analyze a complex computing problem and to apply principles of computing and other relevant disciplines to identify solutions. (ABET CAC Outcome 1)
  • Objective 2: Graduates will be engaged in applications of problem solving and communications skills for a wide variety of problems in engineering and/or computer science either as individuals or in teams.
    • Outcome 2a. Students will have an ability to function effectively as a member or leader of a team engaged in activities appropriate to the program's discipline. (ABET CAC Outcome 5)
    • Outcome 2b. Students will have an ability to design, implement, and evaluate a computing-based solution to meet a given set of computing requirements in the context of the program's discipline. (ABET CAC Outcome 2)
    • Outcome 2c. Students will have an ability to communicate effectively in a variety of professional contexts. (ABET CAC Outcome 3)
  • Objective 3: Graduates will be active participants in a local, national, or global engineering or computer science community.
    • Outcome 3a. Students will have an ability to recognize professional responsibilities and make informed judgments in computing practice based on legal and ethical principles. (ABET CAC Outcome 4)
