Part of the UE experience is the opportunity to travel and study at Harlaxton College. There is a lot of preparation that is done with students here on the UE campus, but we want to answer some frequently asked questions and welcome you and your family to the UE Harlaxton adventure!
Applying for Harlaxton
Applications for Harlaxton are taken online and will open one year before the start of the term that your student will study at Harlaxton for semester programs. Summer programs will be open a minimum of six months before the summer session. There is a priority deadline for all programs, and students must apply by this deadline and submit the $45 application fee to be accepted. After acceptance, students must place a deposit to hold their space in the program. Students are sent instructions on how to place the deposit upon acceptance, and this can be done over the phone if you live outside of Evansville.
There are two options for flights to Harlaxton. You can purchase a flight independently or you can purchase the group trip through a local Evansville travel agent. In either case, students have to be at London Heathrow Airport by 10:30 a.m. on arrival day to take the group transfer to Harlaxton College. Detailed flight information will be sent to your student with the travel dates and group option during the semester prior to travel. Our advice is to compare prices and options to get to London on the arrival day. Students will enter all flight details into our online system, and the Harlaxton team will be at the airport in London waiting for students to arrive.
Costs for the program are similar to the costs at UE. You can see estimated Harlaxton costs under our Student Financial Services area. You will also have to purchase round trip air to the UK. Students must have a valid passport, and they will need to have spending money for travel, souvenirs, and other expenses during the semester.
Harlaxton College offers a college sponsored travel program that is an option for all students. You can see examples of past trips and pricing on the Harlaxton website. Many students participate in these excursions and all college sponsored travel ensures a Harlaxton courier is with the group to help with questions and emergencies.
Students also have the option to travel independently. We do require that students follow check out procedures from the Manor. Many students find this travel a great option to explore Europe and beyond with friends. The UK is home to many budget airlines that allow for students to travel at a low cost including Ryan Air and Easy Jet. Students have the help of the student development office to answer questions as they plan their adventures. This may seem like a big step for your college students, but we see the growth in self-confidence and the amazing learning that happens when students travel on their weekends.
How we prepare your students
Your student will have a series of orientations on the UE campus. Students will come to group meetings to learn about logistics and arrival procedures, how to register for classes and options for travel during the semester, amongst other topics. This is a great time for students to ask questions and meet their fellow Harlaxton travelers before departure. A series of optional sessions are also run alongside the orientations to cover subjects including advice for first time travelers, budgeting for Harlaxton, cultural differences and how to plan independent travel. Students will also complete a series of forms in the online application system and will have the Harlaxton College programs office to answer any questions and provide guidance.
Can you visit?
Yes, many families visit the Manor. You may email firstname.lastname@example.org to reserve a room at the Manor. If there is no availability, the Manor will suggest local hotels and bed and breakfasts. We don’t book families in the Manor during the first two weeks of the semester or in the final week of the semester. These times are set aside for students to settle in as well as to prepare and take their finals. Other times during the semester are great to visit. Please note that bookings can only be made one semester in advance, so if your students will be studying at Harlaxton in the spring semester, we can make the booking the fall before they study at Harlaxton.
