Introduction

The University of Evansville Department of Art believes learning is not a product but a transformative process. Students are challenged with a stimulating environment in which to formulate their personal ideas. They are given a place to build a solid foundation and are inspired to develop strong technical skills and expand their aesthetic knowledge. Art students will also benefit from a complete education that fosters personal and professional success through purposeful engagement and mentoring relationships with dedicated faculty.

The Department of Art's purpose is to encourage students in the development of artistic expression, promote personal ideation, cultivate them to be creative problem solvers while expanding critical thinking and aesthetic knowledge in preparation for art or design-related careers. The Department also works with the School of Education to serve the needs of students pursuing Art Education. Upon degree completion, Art majors are prepared for graduate school or various career options. Students are provided a diverse experience and exposure in art through a variety of visiting artist lectures and exhibitions in the Krannert and Melvin Peterson Galleries, field trips to area design-related firms, and professional artists’ studios, along with excursions to museums outside the area.

The Department of Art at UE offers a wide range of degree programs and areas of specialization in the visual arts. Each is designed to encourage students in the development of personal ideas and to provide them with technical skills and aesthetic knowledge in preparation for a career in art or a related field. The Art curriculum is developed to produce graduates with a solid foundation, strong technical and communication skills, professional presentation practices, and hands-on practical experiences that will promote lifelong awareness and appreciation of design and the visual fine arts.

These meaningful opportunities help UE Art students prepare for successful careers:

  • Hands-on gallery experience and the chance to have work displayed in the Melvin Peterson Gallery, UE’s premier exhibit space
  • Diverse course selections ranging from computer graphics and painting to ceramics and metalwork
  • On-campus practicums with student publications and various offices and departments
  • Internships with design firms, publishers, marketing departments, museums, photography studios, galleries, and more
