Evan McCracken

Assistant Professor of Psychology

Evan entered college in pursuit of the medical field, hoping to someday become a doctor.

His decision was fueled by the time he spent working in the dining services of a hospital while he was in high school. But after taking a social psychology course with Dr. Margaret Stevenson, one of his favorite professors, he found his true interest in psychology and changed his major.

The biggest challenge Evan faced was balancing his full-time studies with his job. At one point, he began struggling in his classes and his advisor expressed her concern for him. He made the difficult decision to quit his job when he switched majors, but his grades began improving, his mental health improved, and other opportunities arose. “I truly do not think I would be where I am today without the faculty pushing and supporting me every step of the way,” Evan said.

Reflecting on his time as a first-gen student, Evan says it can be easy to feel lost. But at UE, the faculty genuinely care about their students and their well-being, even outside of the classroom setting.

“Learn to be comfortable with the uncomfortable” is Evan's piece of advice to current Aces. “Challenge yourself to talk to professors within your department and ask about doing research with them – even if you don't think you're capable of the work. They will push you, challenge you, and inspire you.”
